Milan Fashion Week SS27: A Fashion Diary Through the Details

FASHION · CULTURE · DESIGN · EVENTS

Milan Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2027 was more than a showcase of new collections. Across the city, fashion unfolded through runway presentations, creative exhibitions, cultural encounters and experiences that brought together different perspectives on contemporary style.

From the refined craftsmanship of established fashion houses to the experimental visions of emerging designers, this season offered a diverse view of fashion’s evolving identity. Beyond the runway, Vogue World Milano, Vogue Café and Cinemoda added further dimensions to the week, connecting fashion with art, cinema, technology and culture.

Looking beyond the collections, I found myself drawn to the details: the construction of a garment, the choice of materials, the atmosphere of a presentation and the creative ideas that give fashion its meaning. This diary brings together some of the collections, events and experiences that caught my attention during Milan Fashion Week SS27.

The Art of Details: Fashion Beyond the Silhouette

Fashion often reveals its character through the smallest details. During Milan Fashion Week SS27, craftsmanship, material choices and the relationship between form and movement offered different ways of understanding contemporary design.

At Fabiana Filippi, refined materials and understated elegance reflect a design language in which subtlety plays an important role. Attention to texture, construction and proportion demonstrates how considered details can shape a contemporary wardrobe.

Daniela Gregis offers a different perspective through expressive silhouettes, layering and textiles. Her approach explores the relationship between garments and the body, placing individuality and materiality at the centre of the design process.

TELL THE TRUTH, with its Spring/Summer 2027 collection DELILAH, presents a contemporary interpretation of the story of Delilah and Samson. Exploring themes of power, desire, seduction and transformation, the collection examines the complexities of identity through the contrast between vulnerability and strength. Designed by founder and creative director Rainy Womack, it was presented at the Major Virtual Tunnel during Milan Fashion Week, using fashion as a medium for exploring femininity and self-expression.

Together, these designers offer distinct perspectives on contemporary fashion, from understated elegance and expressive textiles to narrative-driven design.

Cultural Heritage Meets Innovation: IN THE FOLD

Beyond the runway, the CNMI Fashion Hub offered another perspective on contemporary fashion through IN THE FOLD: Chinese Fashion in the Making. Presented at Palazzo Morando during Milan Fashion Week SS27, the exhibition brought together 14 works by 15 designers from Beijing Institute of Fashion Technology, exploring the relationship between cultural heritage, material experimentation and emerging technologies.

Curated by Zou You, with Wan Lan as co-curator, the exhibition was organised around three interconnected themes: the hand and material intelligence, emerging technologies, and the body and lived experience. Together, these themes explored how design knowledge moves between craft workshops, laboratories and studios in China today.

One particularly striking example was the collaborative knitwear work by Wang Yingnan and Huang Haiqiao, inspired by the murals of the Dunhuang Mogao Caves. Combining AI-assisted image generation with digital knitting programming, the designers translated traditional imagery into a seamless tubular knitted structure, bringing historical visual references into a contemporary design context.

Other works explored traditional craftsmanship, innovative construction techniques, 3D printing and material reuse, demonstrating how cultural knowledge can inform new approaches to fashion design.

What stood out to me was the exhibition’s approach to innovation—not as a departure from tradition, but as a way of reinterpreting it. Through material exploration, technological experimentation and the relationship between clothing and the body, IN THE FOLD presented fashion as an evolving dialogue between heritage and contemporary creativity.

Within the wider landscape of Milan Fashion Week, the exhibition offered a perspective beyond seasonal trends, highlighting the importance of research, education and cultural exchange in shaping the future of fashion.

Looking back at Milan Fashion Week SS27, what remains with me is the diversity of perspectives that shaped the week. From the refined details of established designers to the expressive narratives of emerging voices and the cultural explorations presented at the CNMI Fashion Hub, each experience offered a different way of understanding contemporary fashion.

Beyond the collections themselves, the week revealed how fashion continues to evolve through craftsmanship, cultural exchange, technological experimentation and new approaches to creative expression. These encounters reminded me that fashion is not defined by the runway alone, but also by the ideas, people and processes that give it meaning.

For me, Milan Fashion Week is ultimately about looking beyond the surface — discovering the stories behind the garments, recognising the value of different creative perspectives and understanding how fashion reflects the world around us.

As the season moves forward, these moments remain part of a wider conversation about creativity, identity and the future of fashion.
