A few years ago, when I first arrived in Milan, I believed what many emerging designers believe:
Create something beautiful, and people will notice.
Fashion has a way of making us believe that talent naturally rises to the surface. But after spending years attending fashion weeks, showroom presentations, exhibitions, and industry events, I’ve learned something different.
The fashion world is not just crowded.
It is noisy.
Every season introduces another wave of promising designers, innovative concepts, and beautifully crafted collections. Yet many disappear before they ever find their audience.
Not because they lack creativity. Not because they lack quality.
But because visibility has become its own discipline. Today, building a fashion brand requires more than a strong collection. It requires clarity, storytelling, consistency, and communication.
Here are five mistakes I repeatedly see emerging brands make.

Mistake #1: No Clear Brand Positioning
One of the first things I ask when I discover a new brand is: “What makes this brand different?” Surprisingly, many brands struggle to answer. They want to be luxury and affordable.Minimal and experimental.Commercial and niche. The result? A confusing message. The brands that stand out know exactly who they are and who they are speaking to.If your audience can’t describe your brand in one sentence, your positioning may not be clear enough..
Mistake #2: Weak Storytelling
Fashion has never been only about clothes. People connect with stories. They want to know why a collection was created, what inspired it, and what it represents.A beautiful dress may catch someone’s attention.A meaningful story gives them a reason to care. When brands only show products without sharing the story behind them, they miss an opportunity to build a deeper connection.

Mistake #3: Inconsistent Communication
Trust comes from consistency.Yet many brands constantly change their visual style, tone of voice, and message. One week the content feels luxurious. The next week it feels casual. Then suddenly it follows a completely different trend. This makes it difficult for people to understand who you are.The strongest brands create a recognizable world that feels consistent across every platform. people can immediately recognize.
Mistake #4: Lack of PR and Media Outreach
Many emerging designers hope journalists, buyers, or stylists will eventually find them. The reality is different.Fashion is built on relationships.Editors receive countless pitches every day. Buyers attend hundreds of presentations each year.Visibility doesn’t happen by accident. It grows through networking, collaboration, and showing up consistently within the industry.Don’t wait to be discovered.Start building connections before you need them.

Mistake #5: Thinking Product Alone Is Enough
This may be the hardest lesson of all.A beautiful product is important. But a beautiful product alone rarely builds a successful brand.Fashion today is about more than design. It’s about communication. It’s about storytelling. It’s about creating a community around your work.Creating the collection is only half the job.The other half is making sure people know it exists.

Living and working in Milan has taught me one thing: The fashion industry is full of talented people.Talent is not rare. Attention is. The brands that grow are not always the loudest or the biggest. They are often the clearest. They know what they stand for, who they are speaking to, and how to communicate it consistently. Because in fashion, being seen is important. But being remembered is what truly matters.
